Who, upon watching the first installment of the Star Wars saga, didn't want a portable device that could project digital images the way R2D2 did with Princess Leia's urgent call for help from Obi-Wan and the rest of the Jedis? We're still a ways from portable holography, but several companies, including a startup created by a pair of college kids, are jockeying to be the first to market with projector cellphones that beam a larger version of whatever's on their tiny screens onto walls. 2. SNOOZE ALARM
Now Santa Claus isn't the only one who can tell when you are sleeping. Swiss researchers have recently invented a shirt studded with sensors that combine readings to detect drowsiness. By monitoring respiration, heart rate, and how much the wearer moves, the shirt--which would be a valuable bit of safety equipment for truck drivers and pilots--can tell whether he or she has nodded off.
