Nov 01, 2009 00:00:00 GMT

In this paper, practical design issues related to the use of high-strength neodymium-iron-boron magnets are described. These magnets have increasing utility in transportation systems (maglev, linear and rotary motors), bearings, and in eddy-current brakes. However, careful design must be done to utilize the full capabilities of these magnets.

Nov 01, 2009 00:00:00 GMT

The potential for high force and low inertia makes the long stator linear induction motor a good candidate for use in aircraft launch. These motors typically have a segmented stator that runs the entire length of travel. A conductive plate is used as the moving shuttle. If high reliability is desired, one approach is to drive shuttle plate using multiple, separately excited stators. Although the stators are separately excited, they are still coupled via mutual inductance and common current paths in the shuttle plate. This paper considers the development of an indirect vector control scheme that accommodates the cross-coupling between stators and allows responsive control of the total force on the shuttle in the presence of faulted stators.

enlace»Optimizing Operation of Segmented Stator Linear Synchronous Motors

Nov 01, 2009 00:00:00 GMT

Linear synchronous motors present both advantages and challenges when used to control vehicles on a guideway. It is often advantageous to split a stator into small segments and drive each segment independently, but this strategy introduces complications not found in single stator systems. Distinctions include stator back–electromotive force variation with vehicle position, vehicle thrust constant variation due to gaps between the stators, and the requirement to synchronize stators overlapped by a common field array. Strategies for compensating for these characteristics are presented, as implemented in both the low-level inverter current control loop and the high-level vehicle motion control loop. This paper also describes a method of optimizing the efficiency of segmented stator installations and an analysis of the appropriate stator segment length for an urban maglev application.

Special attention is given to established technology already found in industry with more in-depth and self-contained information, while recent advances and state-of-the-art contributions are addressed with useful references. This paper serves as an introduction to the subject for the not-familiarized reader, as well as an update or reference for academics and practicing engineers working in the field of industrial and power electronics.

enlace»Modeling and Simulation in Support of System Level Design for High Acceleration Linear Motors

Nov 01, 2009 00:00:00 GMT

Software tools offer powerful support in the areas of engineering specification, design, implementation, and test. The tools are at their most potent when they actively promote agility and responsiveness throughout a product life cycle and leave a legacy of knowledge to inform future product development. Model-based design facilitates these benefits by considering a simulation of the system under development as an executable specification. This executable specification may be regarded as “one truth” across engineering teams with the simulation being abstracted or enhanced as appropriate. First-principle, data-driven, and physical modeling further strengthens model-based design, by allowing the agility and responsiveness afforded by model-based design to be relevant for both algorithmic and nonalgorithmic design considerations. Indeed, models are a powerful means to offer support for in-service operation, diagnostics of unintended operations and assessment and upgrades of control systems and/or system architectures during the entire life-cycle of a product. This paper will consider the benefits of physical modeling and model-based design through an example of a high acceleration linear motor. The motor type, power electronic-drive switching strategy, and power-electronic drive architecture will be considered. Finally, the use of parallel computing within the context of this application will be discussed, in particular as an effective means to generate results for a large number of operational scenarios in a time-effective manner.

Nov 01, 2009 00:00:00 GMT

Recent developments in second-generation (2G) HTS wire and coil technology are presented highlighting the ability of 2G HTS wire to function under demanding operating conditions associated with many applications including linear motors for transportation. The challenges of use in various coil constructions and applications are discussed. The 2G wire architecture of a structural substrate, buffer stack, HTS layer, and stabilization enables the 2G wire to tolerate high stress levels while providing the high current density required for lightweight, compact magnets. The high winding current density that is available with SuperPower's thin (0.1 mm) 2G HTS wire has been utilized in several coil demonstrations, including one generating central fields in excess of 26.8 T. The ability of the wire to be tailored (stabilization, insulation, ac losses) to fit various operating parameters will also be discussed.

enlace»Electrochemical Double-Layer Capacitors Using Carbon Nanotube Electrode Structures

Nov 01, 2009 00:00:00 GMT

The structure and behavior of the electrical double-layer capacitor (EDLC) are described. The use of activated carbon electrodes is discussed and the limitations on voltage and accessible surface area are presented. Metrics for evaluating EDLC performance are defined and previously reported results of experimental carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes are tabulated. New experimental results of electrodes constructed of vertically aligned CNTs grown on a conducting substrate are presented. By extrapolating prior and new experimental data the energy density of CNT-based EDLCs is shown to be potentially up to seven times that of commercial activated carbon-based EDLCs.

enlace»A Novel MagPipe Pipeline Transportation System Using Linear Motor Drives

Nov 01, 2009 00:00:00 GMT

A novel capsule pipeline transportation system using linear motor drives, called Magplane MagPipe, is under development with the intention to replace trucks and railways for hauling materials from the mine to the rail head, power plant, or processing plant with reduced operating cost and energy consumption. The initial demonstration of a MagPipe line in Inner Mongolia will be a 500-m-long double-pipe coal transport system with the design transportation capacity of 3 Mega-Mg per year. The pipeline consists of 6-m-long plastic pipe modules with an I-beam suspension system inside the pipe to carry sets of five coupled capsules. The pipe will also contain noncontinuous motor winding modules spaced at 50-m intervals. A set of Halbach-arrayed permanent magnets on the bottom of the capsules interact with the linear motor windings to provide propulsion. The motor is driven by variable frequency drives outside the pipe to control the speed. This paper briefly describes the overall MagPipe pipeline transportation system, including the preliminary conclusions of the linear synchronous motor analysis.

For the test track, in-track linear motors are used powered by standard industry inverters combined with an in-house control concept. The system and its operational experiences are described.

enlace»General Atomics Linear Motor Applications: Moving Towards Deployment

Nov 01, 2009 00:00:00 GMT

This paper discusses a number of unique potential applications of linear synchronous and linear induction motors that have resulted from General Atomics' work on the Navy EMALS project for electromagnetically launching planes, and the Urban Maglev project, which uses a long-stator permanent magnet linear synchronous motor. The paper provides an overview of the linear motor technologies being used in these projects, including some of the technical challenges. Potential applications include the use of maglev technology to move cargo in and out of the ports, all-electric trucks which use the energy provided by the linear motor to charge onboard power, and retrofitting linear motors on existing rails to relieve pollution involved in moving cargo in urban settings.

enlace»The Linear Motor Powered Transportation Development and Application in China

Nov 01, 2009 00:00:00 GMT

The appearance of the linear motor powered transportation, including the high-speed and low-speed maglev and linear motor powered car, is a very important achievement for passenger transport for the 20th century. Since the late 1980s, China has started the maglev key technology research and development, and a high-speed demonstration line in Pudong, Shanghai, was built and put into operation successfully with the joint cooperation of China and Germany. For future long distance transport application, it is prepared to construct the 170 km long Shanghai-Hangzhou high-speed maglev line in the near future. The linear-motor car is already in operation in Guangzhou and will be used in Beijing airport line. Low-speed maglev is also considered for urban and intercity application. The present paper summarizes the development and application of the linear motor powered transportation in China.

enlace»Outlook of the Superconducting Maglev

Nov 01, 2009 00:00:00 GMT

The superconducting maglev has been developed as an ultra-high speed mass transport system. It makes use of modern superconducting magnets (SCMs), which enable a large gap electro-dynamic suspension and an efficient linear motor propulsion. Running tests have been conducted smoothly on the 18.4-km-long Yamanashi Maglev Test Line since 1997 and reaped the harvests such as the maximum speed of 581 km/h, relative speed of 1026 km/h on two trains' passing test and on-board high temperature SCM running tests. In March 2005 the Committee under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport appreciated that “all the technologies of the Superconducting Maglev necessary for the future revenue service were established.” Based on this situation, JR Central has decided to expand the existing test line as well as renew the existing facilities and equipment into those of the future revenue service level. Furthermore, the company has decided to promote the Tokaido Shinkansen Bypass project utilizing the superconducting maglev system.

Nov 01, 2009 00:00:00 GMT

Korea's Urban Maglev Program is a final stage of a series of R&D projects on maglev system development. The goals of the program are to develop a competitive transit maglev system and to operate the developed system on the 6.1-km demonstration line on revenue service basis. More than 300 researchers and engineers from 26 industrial, academic, and research institutions are currently participating the program. Once the Urban Maglev Program is completed by 2012, Korea will have the world's third maglev trains and second urban version for revenue service in operation.

enlace»Linear Motor-Powered Transportation: History, Present Status, and Future Outlook

Nov 01, 2009 00:00:00 GMT

An outline of the different fields of application for linear motors in transportation is given. The different types of linear motors are described and compared. The current status of the different linear motors used in the transportation sector is analyzed. Finally, a look at worldwide activities and future prospects is presented.

enlace»Efficient and Affordable Maglev Opportunities in the United States

Nov 01, 2009 00:00:00 GMT

Maglev has the potential to be more efficient and affordable than alternative technologies for many transportation applications. To achieve this potential we need new designs that build on what we have learned from existing maglev designs, while taking advantage of supporting technology that did not exist when most of them were created. The keys to reducing energy intensity are to use light vehicles with low aerodynamic drag, use a linear synchronous motor that is excited in short sections, and operate with a dynamic schedule that achieves a high load factor. The key to affordability is to use small, light vehicles that can operate on less expensive guideways, and require less power for propulsion. This paper provides more details on these issues, provides estimates of what is feasible with today's technology, and discusses how to choose performance parameters, such as speed and acceleration, so as to maximize the probability that maglev will become the technology of choice for a wide range of applications. It also includes an historical perspective and recommendations for future development.
